Monday 2nd March witnessed the arrival of community green waste onto the newly opened Old Woods Farm site to the immense relief of the Otter Rotter team. Having worked tirelessly to protect the Garden Waste Scheme from the closure threat caused by the consequences of licencing regime changes, the team took time out to celebrate before returning to the kerb side rounds.

Otter Rotters at woods farm“Failure to get the site open on Monday morning would have resulted in the suspension of collections which is something we have been desperately trying to avoid. This small, hard won step towards reinstating community composting in East Devon is a move in the right direction although the enhanced fee structure for Permits does mean we need several sites instead of the one larger site which we established in 2006. This illogical stance on fees has inevitably forced our costs up and put a huge, sustained strain on the volunteers” said Mandy Jennings, a director of the group.

On opening the site, Devon County Councillor Claire Wright paid tribute to the team “I am always struck by the emotional attachment that the volunteers have for the scheme and their dedication to it. The group has faced so many trials and tribulations working in an area that is set up for big business and not for community not for profit groups.”

Mandy Jennings said “There have been a number of people that have played a part in getting this site open and I must mention Cllr Roger Giles who identified the site after our planning application was refused on another site. Notably Councillor Claire Wright has offered practical help on several occasions and has been instrumental in supporting our ‘back to work’ programme for people who have been facing difficulties. Without her timely support we would have lost further vital capacity and we would have been forced to suspend the rounds which would have been a harsh blow to the scheme users.”
