In the strange world of the past the town of Ottery St Mary was much troubled by Pixies who did not live at all harmoniously with the early human settlers in the area. The town was finally rid of this menace on midsummer's day 1454. Every year this is commemorated by Pixie Day which is a town pageant that is also a fundraising event for the local Scout and Guide organization.

The Tar Barrel tradition is hundreds of years old. The exact origins are unknown but probably started after the gunpowder plot of 1605. Various alternative reasons suggested for burning barrels have included fumigation of cottages and as a warning of the approach of the Spanish armada.

Ottery St Mary Choral Society has an active membership of between seventy and eighty singers. The choir performs two or three concerts a year, usually in the Ottery Parish Church.

The Ottery St Mary Scout Group have been in existence from almost the beginning of Scouting, (we have a picture dated 1918) and is one of number of groups in East Devon. We have our own headquarters (based off Winters Lane) and a large selection of camping and activity equipment. We also offer the hall for hire to both groups and individuals.

Ottery Community Theatre was founded in 1985 after a Community Play, The Ballad of Tilly Hake, produced by the Colway Theatre Trust. Our first production was The Yeomen Of The Guard and since then we've produced at least one play every year.

'A Helping Hand When You Need it Most’

Around 80 volunteers are coordinated from an office in the Coleridge Medical Centre, some being drivers and many helping in numerous other ways. The Ottery St Mary and District Help Scheme serves across the communities and across all age groups.
13   Link   Ottery Tennis Club
The club was formed in 1948 and played initially at a site in
Winters Lane, in 1981 the club moved to the Astroturf pitch based next to King’s School Ottery St Mary. In 2009 a new Multi Use Games and Activities pitch was built above the Colin Tooze Sports Centre that included three tennis courts, which the club have used since being made available by King’s School.
The Club has regular sessions throughout the summer and winter on weekends and weekdays at this venue.
